A Home Orchestrated by God

The Okere Family

The Journey of the Okere Family

People often ask us: how in the world did we end up here in Maple Ridge? Interestingly, we ask ourselves the same question. How did we end up here, in St. Patrick’s Parish? We believe it was orchestrated by God from the very beginning.

When we came to St. Patrick’s for the first time 12 years ago from South Africa, it truly felt like home. Even though we didn’t know many parishioners then, the feeling was unmistakable. Starting afresh in Canada was a challenge—leaving everything behind to begin again—but through every struggle, we saw the hand of God in the support of various parishioners and Fr. Matthew To.

Irene and Don

Don and Irene

From finding a place to stay and children adjusting to new schools, to Don navigating the Canadian medical practice and the grueling process of getting a local driver’s license—adjusting to a new culture was difficult and draining.

However, we have enjoyed so much fruit from this parish home. From seeing Jimmy serve at the altar and celebrate his Confirmation, to Don and Dunstan serving as Knights of Columbus, the blessings have been immeasurable. Dunstan always looks forward to serving at the pancake breakfasts and parish festivals, encouraged by the support of this community.

25 Years of Grace

Wedding Blessing

One of our greatest joys was celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. It was such a blessing to see parishioners not only celebrate with us at Mass but also join us for our traditional Nigerian party. It truly showed us that we are one family in Christ.

St. Patrick’s has continued to support us in becoming missionary disciples. It has afforded us the space to share our stories and testimonies, helping us discover our spiritual gifts. Whether it is Irene singing in the choir (with Jessica and Amaka helping her learn her lines!) or serving in various ministries, we have been given the opportunity to use our gifts in our spheres of influence.

“St. Patrick’s is truly a home to us… thankful to God for all His graces and blessings that He has continued to pour immeasurably upon us.”
